"Lake Marie" is the centerpiece, a sprawling narrative that weaves love together with childhood memories of Chicago, the music shifting under it like weather. Elsewhere the record swings between slick rock and Prine's plainspoken, deadpan storytelling, that warm crack in his voice carrying every line.
