These tapes sat in a studio vault for decades, and they sound like it in the best way: loose, warm, and lived-in, Waylon's baritone front and center over the Waylors' easy roadhouse swing. Ralph Mooney's pedal steel cries, Jessi Colter and Tony Joe White lend their hands, and his take on Fleetwood Mac's 'Songbird' arrives tender and unguarded. Recorded between 1973 and 1984 at the height of his run, assembled by his son Shooter. Outlaw country caught off the clock and all the better for it.
