Where TPAB was warm and jazz-inflected, DAMN. Is cold, spare, and trap-adjacent. Hard 808s, compressed bass, minimalist synths. 'DNA.' is vicious and booming. The second verse was recorded a cappella first, then Kendrick told Mike Will Made-It to build the beat around the rhymes and make it sound like chaos. 'HUMBLE.' is a minimalist piano-and-bass sledgehammer. 'FEAR.' dissects fear at ages 7, 17, and 27 across three devastating verses. Probably the most emotionally rich song in his entire catalog.
